He laughed. “It’s no secret, my lady. That I am. Your friend likes to dance, does she not?”
“Oh, yes. My cousin does so love to dance. But I prefer not to.”
“Then what do you prefer to do?”
“I like to walk and watch the festivities. This is my first Harvest Holiday.”
He offered her his arm. “Then will you walk and watch with me?”
“Yes, I will.” Taking his arm, they spent the evening strolling from one bonfire to the next, laughing at the jugglers, listening to the bards, and talking to one another until finally they stood on the periphery of the last bonfire, closest to Silvane Forest.
“Do you believe there is magic in there?” she asked, peering into the mysterious darkness.
“Yes. I know there is.”
He peered down at her in such a way Josephine felt her pulse trip faster. So fast that when she spoke again, she was out of breath.
“I would like to see magic, if it is there.”
He lifted her hand to his lips, brushing a kiss across her knuckles. “Will you let me show you?”
“Yes, I will,” said Josephine.
