“Won’t you tell me?”
Pulling a jar from his stall shelves, he opened the top and revealed his treasure within. “Silver leaves from the black oak trees of Silvane Forest.” He nodded toward the dark woodlands beyond the line of bonfires already set for the feast. “They hold magic,” he whispered.
“Magic, indeed.” It was Josephine’s turn to smile. “I do not believe in magic.”
He chuckled. “It exists all the same.”
“And what does this potion do which you are brewing?”
His eyes crinkled together with joy…or perhaps mischief. “This is a love potion.”
Love. She had never known love.
“If I give this potion to someone, it will make them fall in love with me?”
“Nay.” He chuckled. “If you drink this potion, it will lead your true love to you.”
“How will I know he’s my true love?”
“Because anything he asks of you, your only reply will be ‘Yes, I will.’”
She eyed the bubbling concoction skeptically while the apothecary dipped a ladle in the cauldron and filled a clear vile with the potion. It sparkled a vibrant, emerald green.
“Here. This is my last batch. But I will give you a vial on one condition.”
“And what is that?”
“That you drink it all down. And if your true love should appear to you tonight, then you must return to me with a gift.”
“What kind of gift?”
“That I shall leave up to you.”
“That is a strange bargain, but I will take it.”
She accepted the vial and drank it all down, feeling it tingle down her throat. Then she caught up to her cousin buying a candied apple.
