Last fall I did something I’d been wanting to do for a long time—I went to the gun range. Now that might not be a big deal to a lot of people, but guns of any kind haven’t been a part of my life. The most I’ve seen are a hunting rifle and a BB gun.
As a writer, who often times writes suspense, I thought I needed more than YouTube videos and online information. I needed the experience. So I went to a local gun range and bought the beginner’s handgun special. I got to shoot:
12 Rounds – .22LR, Revolver
20 Rounds – .22LR, Semi-Automatic
6 Rounds – .38 Special, Revolver
10 Rounds – 9mm, Semi-Automatic
10 Rounds - .40 S&W, Semi-Automatic
7 Rounds – .45 ACP, Semi-Automatic
6 Rounds – .357 Magnum, Revolver
It was a very visceral experience—the loud bangs (even with ear protection), the flying brass casings, the kick from the higher calibre weapons. This can only make me a better writer when doing action scenes for my books. I didn’t do half bad either, if I do say so myself.
I had a blast. (Pun intended.) Since I went with my brother and sister-in-law (she’s the hunter in the family), it made for a fun family outing. I’d definitely do it again.
