5 Favorite Songs that Make Me Swoon

I love music, just like books, that hits me right in the feels. So when I started writing about a scruffy, rugged, bad boy musician, I knew he needed to be gritty and raw—but with a soft and loving heart deep down inside. That combination of tough and vulnerable gets me every time! Now that you know what a sucker I am, here are five of my favorite, swooniest songs I can’t get enough of.

Mesa, Arizona by Jeffrey Foucault

Look at that man! Listen to his voice! The lyrics are a delicious mix of romantic and heartbreaking, and when he sings “You’re my one and only one,” I think of Ryan singing to Claire. Heartmelt.

Ten Year Night by Lucy Kaplansky

I’ve always found this song so sexy and romantic! She’s also HILARIOUS in concert. This clip has a really nice intro about meeting her husband and how that inspired her to write this song on their anniversary. The whole thing is #relationshipgoals.

Done by Frazey Ford

A badass breakup song isn’t necessarily “swoony,” but this song makes me want to dance and punch a pillow and kick some ass and hang out with my best friends and swear a lot—so I have to include it on any list of favorites! Plus, the music video is freaking awesome.

Beautiful Man by Lori McKenna

McKenna recorded this song at her kitchen table as part of a demo album called The Kitchen Tapes. She’s said: “The recordings are far from perfect, but they were never meant to be. I’d like to think that their imperfections add to their beauty, and I hope you will, too.” Seems pretty true for my favorite romance characters, too. This whole album was a huge inspiration to me when I was writing Make Me Yours!

Coming Home to Me by Patty Griffin

Here’s the video of Patty Griffin performing Coming Home to Me as her final song at Celebrate Brooklyn in 2013, which I was lucky enough to see live. I love how pretty the harmony is in this song, and the whole idea in it that no matter what happens in life: “You’re coming home to me, just remember.” Talk about an HEA in song form!

What songs make you swoon every time you hear them? Let me know in the comments.

Claire Collins has always been good—except when it comes to bad boys. Or one bad boy in particular: a tattooed musician as skilled with her body as he is with his guitar. But he wasn’t ready to be a father, so she left him to raise their daughter on her own. Only fate had other plans, and suddenly, Ryan is back in her life, disrupting everything. This time, though, she’s determined not to lose her heart…even if she still craves his touch.
Ryan Thomas never expects to see Claire again—especially not in a small mountain town in Washington on the last show of his comeback tour. But when the lights come on, there she is, more beautiful than ever. One incredible night with her won’t be enough… But he’ll have to prove he’s not the man he used to be, if he wants to keep her—and his family—for good.

Rebecca Brooks lives in New York City in an apartment filled with books. She received a PhD in English but decided it was more fun to write books than write about them. She has backpacked alone through India and Brazil, traveled by cargo boat down the Amazon River, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, explored ice caves in Peru, trekked to the source of the Ganges, and sunbathed in Burma, but she always likes coming home to a cold beer and her hot husband in the Bronx. Her books are about independent women who leave their old lives behind to try something new–and find the passion, excitement and purpose they didn’t know they’d been missing.
