#DIY Friday with Julie Rowe

One of my favorite things to create (outside of writing books) is folded book art. The concept is simple – fold individual pages of a hardcover book to create a pattern of letters or shapes in the pages. They make wonderful keepsakes and gifts!

How make folded book art:

Tools: you will need a ruler (centimetres), a pencil, a pattern, and a hardcover book (at least 21 cms tall or taller) with enough pages to create the shape or word.

  1. Choose your word or shape. I’ve included the pattern to create the small heart pictured above.
  2. Determine the number of pages the book needs to have. You can have a book with more pages than you need, but not less than you need.
    1. The heart shape requires 65 folds. Since a fold uses one complete page (both sides of the paper), you must multiply the number of folds by 2 to get your page count. In this case 65 x 2 = 130 pages.
  3. Find the start page for folding.
    1. For example, your shape requires 130 pages and you have a book that’s 208 pages long. You’d have 78 pages left over. Divide that in half to ensure you have the same number of pages unfolded on either side of the shape. 78 / 2 = 39.
    2. Your start page is 39.
  4. Begin with fold #1. Measure for mark #1 by putting zero on the ruler on the left edge of the page. Using the example below, mark #1 should be made with a pencil at 9.6 cms. Mark #2 at 10.6 cms.
  5. Mark the remaining pages following the pattern.
  6. Fold the pages. Take the left edge and fold at 90% at the mark, repeat with the right edge. To see a video example go to foldedbookart.com http://bit.ly/2pxz7Vz

Check out Julie’s new release Viable Threat, out now!

Special Forces soldier and medic Walter River would give anything to snatch more than a few seconds of down time to see if he can rattle the no-nonsense and incredibly hot Dr. Lloyd he’s protecting, but dodging explosions, snipers, and student radicals who’ve unleashed a lethal bio-engineered microorganism have made that almost impossible. Maybe he’ll get a chance—if he can figure out how to keep them both alive.

CDC microbiologist Ava Lloyd races to find a cure for a bio-terrorism organism sweeping El Paso. The few stolen moments with her very hunky bodyguard River have been explosive, but no matter how alluring he is, she can’t afford to get distracted. The clock is ticking, people are dying by the hundreds, and once this crisis is solved, they’ll both be off on their next assignment, thousands of miles apart.

Julie Rowe’s first career as a medical lab technologist in Canada took her to the North West Territories and northern Alberta, where she still resides. She loves to include medical details in her romance novels, but admits she’ll never be able to write about all her medical experiences because, “Fiction has to be believable”. Julie writes romantic suspense and romantic military thrillers. Her most recent titles include Viable Threat, the first book in the Disease Control and Enforcement series, and Viral Justice, book three of the Biological Response Team series.
