Behind the Book: The Billionaire Fiancés Boxed Set with Carmen Falcone

Put Yourself in My Shoes

“You’ll need to take off your shoes,” the taxi driver told me. “That’s how you show respect for the tribe by walking barefoot on their terrain.”

Thrills of anticipation moved through me. I contemplated the beautiful scenery before me… A lush combination of tall grass and coconut trees framed the remote sandy beaches we drove by.

Backstory: I’d been writing Kidnapping the Brazilian Tycoon, and during that time I was actually vacationing in Brazil. I have lived in Texas for the past thirteen years, but I feel every time I go back home I learn something new about my birthplace—and about myself.

To make my fictitious tribe of Brazilian Indians (the natives who occupied the land before it was discovered by Europeans) believable and realistic, I’d asked around for a tour guide with experience in the area to show me around and hopefully introduce me to a cacique, the tribe’s leader.

You have to understand. I’m a city bird. I love nature and all, but as long as I’m appreciating it from far away or at least from an air-conditioned hotel room. Bugs, excess heat and lack of bathroom just scare the bejesus out of me.

But when I heard a cacique had agreed to talk to me and show me around, I couldn’t let go. It was not only luck, it was a privilege. Brazilian Indians have suffered a lot for hundreds of years, and have been ostracized.

The tribe was located about an hour and a half from my hometown. I have to say, cacique Antonio blew me away and by the end of my stay there, I didn’t pay much attention to the bugs or lack of silly modern-day shenanigans. I didn’t care about the dirt between my toes, or how crazy frizzy my hair looked. The stories, the people, the food… they drew me in and created memories I’ll never forget. Want to know more? Give Bruno Duarte & Addie Reed a chance—the hero and heroine from the book. A hot Brazilian tycoon with a dangerous secret clashes with an American activist hell-bent on fighting for those without a voice. Who will win?
