This week a special guest:

Old Fashioned with Tamara Hughes

Who tried it: Tamara Hughes, author of Once Upon a Masquerade

Why she likes it:

Who are we kidding? Sometimes you just want an easy, yet tasty, mixed drink. Am I right?

I grew up in north central Wisconsin where Old Fashioneds are a must. While I’ve found this drink is made in different ways depending on where in the country you order it, the Old Fashioneds I’m used to are super easy to make and require no fruit (unless you’d like to add a maraschino cherry).

Ingredients:

1 oz. whiskey or brandy

A couple of dashes of bitters or a splash of grenadine

Lemon/lime soda

Instructions:

If you’d like an Old-Fashioned Sweet, use the grenadine instead of the bitters. If you’d prefer an Old-Fashioned Sour (like me), the bitters are what you need.

Drop some ice cubes in a glass, add a shot of brandy or whiskey, your bitters or grenadine, and fill the rest of the glass with soda. Voila! And oh so good!

With all that extra time not spent in the kitchen, what’s Tamara currently reading?

Reading YA books is a weakness of mine. While I haven’t started it yet, the next novel I plan to read is The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness.

Prentisstown isn’t like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone’s thoughts in an overwhelming, never-ending stream of Noise. But in a town where privacy is impossible, there is a secret so awful that Todd, still a month shy of being a man, must run for his life. But how to you escape when your pursuers can hear your every thought?

Such an interesting premise! And who can resist a first page that starts out with…

The first thing you find out when yer dog learns to talk is that dogs don’t got nothing much to say. About anything.

“Need a poo, Todd.”

New York City, 1883

A Prince Charming meets his match…

Self-made shipping magnate Christopher Black first spies Rebecca Bailey at a masquerade ball and is captivated by her refreshing naiveté and sparkling beauty. She’s a stark contrast to the hollow behavior of the ton and the guile of his former fiancee, but the closer he gets to her secrets, the further she pushes him away.

A Cinderella with a secret…

Rebecca is drawn to the charismatic Christopher from the first, but she cannot risk him discovering that she is really a housemaid impersonating an heiress. Her father’s life depends on it.

A Happily Ever After that could never be…

When Christopher’s investigation of the murder of his best friend leads him straight to Rebecca, he fears his ingenue may be a femme fatale in disguise. Now he must decide if he can trust the woman he’s come to love, or if her secrets will be his downfall.

A small town girl with a big imagination, Tamara Hughes had no idea what to do with her life. After graduating from college, she moved to a big city, started a family and a job, and still struggled to find that creative outlet she craved. An avid reader of romance, she gave writing a try and became hooked on the power of exploring characters, envisioning adventures, and creating worlds. She enjoys stories with interesting twists and heroines who have the grit to surmount any obstacle, all without losing the ability to laugh.
