Hi, I’m Diane Alberts (though I also write as Jen McLaughlin), and I have two Indulgence books out. Faking It, and On One Condition. Soon, I’ll have a third called Beauty and the Boss!

I thought it would be fun to talk about creating a modern day fantasy hero, and what makes them so much fun for both readers and writers alike. For me, the best part about making an Indulgence hero is balancing the sexy alpha male with the sensitive nature of an Indulgence hero.

For Derek Rory, my hero from Faking It, this was particularly fun! Derek is a man who was raised without any love or compassion. A man who spent his life trying to prove he was worth something, but in the process of becoming the successful man he was, he never really learned how to laugh and have fun.

He lived for his work, and that was all he knew.

Enter Stephanie, who is full of life and laughter, throw in a fake engagement and sexual tension for good measure, and you have a modern day fairytale hero. Derek might not know how to be fun or loosen up, but he sure knows how to swoop in and save a damsel in distress.

And that’s my favorite part of an Indulgence hero. Watching his defenses crumble as he slowly but surely falls in love with his heroine.
