Behind the Book with Candy Sloane

About two years ago a book titled Sneaking Candy came out written by me, Lisa Burstein.

It is about a twenty-something woman in a graduate writing program who writes erotic romance under a pseudonym because she is afraid she will not be taken seriously by her peers. Readers & I fell in love with Candy Sloane the heroine of the book.

She was hilarious, sassy, sexy and smart.

I started to think maybe I should write an erotic romance. I have always loved reading them, it was part of the reason I made Candy an erotic romance author. Sneaking Candy is a battle cry about legitimacy in writing and how romance of all types has just as much value as literary fiction.

So, my latest book is that erotic romance. It’s titled Best Friends with Benefits and it’s written by “Candy Sloane”. It uses her wit and humor and was honestly TOO, TOO, TOO SEXY for me to write as me. I’m not hiding that I’m also Candy, but I did want to differentiate it for my YA and NA readers who aren’t looking for something quite so hot in the sexy department.

It’s about two best friends who reunite at a high school reunion and try to have a sex-only weekend relationship. Instead, they rekindle an out of control flame fourteen years in the making.

I had the best time writing it and having the pseudonym freed me up in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I didn’t come to erotic romance the traditional way. I stumbled there fictionally, but I plan on staying here for as long as readers will have me.

About Best Friends with Benefits:

Valerie Barkin and Alec Rogers survived high school the only way best friends can—together. But surviving their ten-year high school reunion? Totally different story. Val still views herself as the stringy-haired band geek, while Alec went on to become a rock star. He’s more than willing to help Val get through their reunion, but when a drunken game of Seven Minutes in Heaven brings their fourteen-years-long foreplay to the forefront…everything changes.
