#AuthorLife with Abigail Owen

A few years ago, this was not my life. A few years ago, I worked as a business analyst for a major tech company. I was working 60 hour work weeks, getting my MBA, raising my kids, and squeezing in books at night before bed. Now, I am a stay-at-home mom who runs her own business (Authors On A Dime) and gets to write (sort of) full time. I am beyond lucky to be living my dream!

I’m sure you’re picturing this…

But really, a day in my life looks more like this example which happened recently…

Good Morning Sunshine (6-8am)

The usual morning supermom routine. Drag self out of bed (regretting staying up and binging on The Originals until way too late). Feed the dogs. Get kids ready and to school. Then whirl around the house getting chores out of the way.

Check Email (9-10am)

Email takes a good chunk of my day. It’s generally the same—send invoices, pay bills, answer questions, add yet another item to my TO DO list for later.

Coloring Book (10-10:30am)

That’s right! I’m having an adult coloring book made for The Boss. Today was sending the artist a copy of the book to read as well as links to images that I think would be good for the scenes in the book. What scenes do you think we should include?

Write an Article/Post (10:30-11am)

Part of releasing a new book involves visiting various sites, and often writing an original post for them to put up with the book’s info. This article was for Fresh Fiction titled Top 10 Reasons to Love a Shifter

Check the Mail (11-11:15am)

I need a brain break. So, I hit the mailbox. Got these awesome stickers for various uses. I have TY boxes going out for this giveaway and think I might put them on the tissue paper. (Oh, and paid some doctors bills, blah, blah, blah.)

Write a Book & Exercise (11:15am-12:15pm)

FINALLY, I hop on my treadmill desk, turn on my Happy Songs playlist, and knock out an hour of writing and walking. That got me 1200 of my 2000 word goal for the day. Not dragon shifters though. Today I’m working on a contemporary. And yes, I dance and sing on the treadmill (or attempt to without falling off).

Design Book Covers (12:15-1:45pm)

I design book covers as part of my business. Today I wrapped one up for publication for the awesome author I also am a virtual personal assistant for. Two others were mockups for another client to get signed off on before I buy the images.

Turn in Edits (1:45-3:15pm)

I got proofreading edits on one of my upcoming dragon shifter books from Entangled. But I wanted to do a full read through this time to check for world building details (I’m writing the books out of order from when they publish). 400 pages divided up over 4 days. Finally finished and sent it back.

Shower & Dress (3:15-3:45pm)

Skipped hair and makeup. But it’s sort of rainy and I’m going to a baseball game, so who cares?

Kids Baseball Game (3:45-8:45pm)

Today is baseball, and hubbie is out of town. So the second kid one gets home, I pop in the car to go get kid 2, feed said children, and get to the field in time for pre-game warm up followed by the game. (They won!)

Homework & Bed (8:45-10pm)

Baseball pushed this later than I like. But you do what you gotta do.

Write More Book (10-10:45pm)

Bedtime for me is “supposed” to be 10pm. BUT, I still had 800 words to go on my 2k word goal for my WIP. So… knocked it out in bed with the dogs.

Write Another Article/Post (10:45-11:30pm)

This one, actually. ? I drank way too much Coke, so figured I’d knock one more thing out (plus, am still binging The Originals). My puppies helped!

Social Media Somewhere In Between

I sprinkle in throughout the day. By sprinkle, I mean I do something about once an hour. Lately, lots of promo for The Boss.

So now it’s 11:45pm. But today was a great day. I got everything done on my To Do list that I wanted. It rarely goes that smoothly. Fingers crossed that it does tomorrow. But…no matter how busy, it’s all with stuff I love to do. This is still the best life I could ever imagine!

Was that what you were picturing?
