Here at Entangled, we like to read.

(Bet you would never have guessed that.)

So we also love quick-n-easy recipes that free up more time for us to indulge in our favorite past time.

Each week we’re sharing some of our favorite recipes to help you find a few extra minutes in your day to enjoy your next favorite book!

This week a special guest:

Not Quite Five Alarm Chili from Dawn Altieri

Who tried it: Dawn Altieri, author of Burn

Why she likes it: In my novel Burn, firefighter Ryan Monroe and the rest of the crew at the Ridgeport Fire Department love their Five Alarm Chili! But let’s face it, summer is no time for slaving over a giant bubbling cauldron, no matter how delicious the end result tastes piled onto your BBQ’d hot dogs. Here’s a quick and easy recipe for your slow cooker that will leave you with plenty of free time to devour a good book by the pool before you devour dinner.

Ingredients:

2 lbs. lean (at least 80%) ground beef

1 large onion, chopped (1 cup)

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 can (28 oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained

1 can (16 oz.) kidney beans, undrained

1 can (15 oz.) tomato sauce

2 tablespoons chili powder

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

Directions:

Cook the beef and onions in a skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 10 minutes until the beef browns; drain.

Combine the beef, onion and remaining ingredients in a  4- to 5-quart slow cooker. Cover and cook on low heat setting for 6 to 8 hours.

***I like my chili with slightly less than “five alarms,” but you can add as much red pepper and jalapeño as you’d like to get your own fire going.

Scoop it over tortilla chips along with shredded cheese, chopped scallions, sliced jalapeños, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce and some sour cream for crowd-pleasing nachos.

Or load it up on your hot dogs at your next cookout!

With all that extra time not spent in the kitchen, what’s Victoria currently reading?
I’m diving into Only for a Night, Book #1 in The Lick Series by Naima Simone. I don’t plan on stopping until I’ve finished Only for Your Touch and Only for You. Talk about five alarm scorching hot!

Don’t miss Dawn’s newest release Burn, out now!

Falling for him is playing with fire…

Chloe Addison is on the verge of a promising career in real estate development until an explosion destroys her first major project and casts suspicion on her in an arson investigation. Her career is suddenly at risk—and possibly her life.

Firefighter Ryan Monroe wants a spot on the arson team, and getting close to Chloe might be the best way to solve his first investigation. Despite a painful past of his own, Ryan has dedicated himself to saving people, and when he realizes Chloe is in danger, she’s no exception. He just might be the perfect guy to rescue her, but their attraction could bring them both down in flames.

With an overactive imagination and a slightly twisted mind, Dawn Altieri has been scribbling stories practically since birth. When she’s not curled up on the sofa with her laptop, her latest story, a box of chocolates and a cup of tea (or a glass of wine, depending on the time of day), she can be found volunteering in the world of animal rescue. She shares her home with her husband and daughter, and a menagerie of rescued fur-babies.
