YA Corner with Alex Bennett: Anything Can Work

Feb 25, 2012 by

Prepare for rambling!

I was really at a loss of what I could write about for this blog, so I went to Twitter for help. Courtney Allison Moulton replied with “ponies.” And it got me thinking. She probably said it as a joke, but really she isn’t far off. I asked for bookish ideas for posts, and she unwillingly got the gears going in my mind.

You can turn any idea into a book. Any idea has the ability to work, if enough work is put into it. Just think about it: before you read Harry Potter, the idea of a small boy finding out he was a wizard and going to a school called Hogwarts sounded strange, right? But when we actually get to experience the story, all of the previous judgments are abolished.

My point is: anything can work. A lot of the ideas for things I myself have written would probably sound weird. And who knows, maybe they are weird. But you can never really tell by first impressions.

Writers just may be a little crazy, since they have the ability to turn weird, strange, and outlandish ideas into sometimes amazing stories that are nothing like what they seem to be.

Never judge a book by its cover… or by what you think it is about. I’m almost always proved wrong.

  1. You are so right! You can turn any idea into a book. Sometimes I think of something random and then challenge myself to do just that. And those stories usually come out better than the normal preplanned ones.

    Great post!
